A Spoonful of Sherman offers us temporary deliverance from the anxiety of these toxic times… you’d have to be off your Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to want it any other way.~ San Jose Mercury News
A Spoonful of Sherman is a delight…exuberant and robust!~The Metro
With a cast of five who sing, dance and cavort with much talent and glee through the plethora of lyrics and tunes, 3Below’s A Spoonful of Sherman is overall delightful and a temptation for humming and singing along that is difficult to resist. A Spoonful of Sherman is well worth dipping into for an evening of reveling in the rich repertoire of the Sherman Brothers. How fun it is to see so many songs performed that much of the world still daily hums and even knows all the words.~ Talkin’ BroadwayWith delightful tunes and clever lyrics, A Spoonful of Sherman is currently making its U.S. debut in Downtown San Jose.Delightfully engaging and performed with enthusiasm…the music is just as fun and exuberant as you remember it and is perfectly framed by the story of its creators. The Sherman Brothers’ songs were written for families to enjoy. They are songs that bring everyone together by design. In a world that feels increasingly fragmented, it’s exciting to feel an audience come together, finding common ground in these songs we love as we all learn about the circumstances behind them. Each performance breathes life into the show. Together they take the audience on a happy adventure through a century of songs to warm even the hardest of hearts. ~ Theater by the BayA New Musical for the entire family, with music from Oscar-winning Disney songwriters The Sherman Brothers, Tin Pan Alley songwriter Al Sherman and present day composer Robert J. Sherman. Subtitled “The Songbook of Your Childhood”, A Spoonful of Sherman is a musical revue which celebrates three generations of creator Robert J. Sherman’s songwriting family’s century-long musical journey including repertoire from the Brothers’: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, “Chim- chim cher-ee”, “Its a Small World (After All)”, “Winnie the Pooh”, “Feed the Birds”, “The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers”, “I Wanna Be Like You” and “Hushabye Mountain”, ending on a rousing rendition of “Let’s Go Fly a Kite!”.
In the early twentieth century, Al Sherman was one of the most sought-after songwriters on New York’s Tin Pan Alley, with songs recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, amongst others. Al’s sons, Robert B. and Richard M. Sherman, were the most successful songwriting partnership in the history of Hollywood composing more movie musical songs and acclaimed film scores than any other writing team. Their Oscar-winning songs from films such as Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Winnie The Pooh, and The Slipper and The Rose and more have entertained the world for more than 60 years. And last, we hear some beautiful songs by Robbie Sherman who picked up the baton for the third generation and celebrates his family’s legacy in this show.
