Oh, It’s a Jolly Holiday with Mary Poppins!
The original super nanny is bringing all of her magical merriment to make our interactive sing-along one you will not soon forget. So let’s all go fly a kite with Mary, Bert, and the adorable Banks children at our Mary Poppins Sing-along Experience!
Join the “practically perfect” Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) for a “Jolly Holiday” as she magically turns every chore into a game and every day into a whimsical adventure. Along the way, you’ll be enchanted by unforgettable characters such as the multitalented chimney sweep Bert (Dick Van Dyke). You won’t need a “Spoonful Of Sugar” to love every moment of this timeless Disney classic!
Your journey to Cherry Tree Lane and the rooftops of London begins with a “practically perfect” vocal warm-up. Then, our host will reach into her magical carpet bag to show you how to use the props in your Fun Pack including a spoonful of sugar and your own umbrella to help you take flight when we teach you the choreography from “Step In Time” and other great songs from the movie. And once the film starts you can “chim chim-in-ey” with a theater full of chimney sweeps, suffragettes, and dancing penguins who love this movie as much as you!
Costumes Required! Okay, not required but strongly encouraged! Keep it simple with a homemade “votes for women” sash or go all out with an authentic Mary Poppins costume. Want to be practically perfect in every way? Get creative and do something completely original: one fan came dressed as a one-man-band, just like Bert!
Mary Poppins is presented by The California Academy for the Creative and Performing Arts in partnership with Guggenheim Entertainment.
In partnership with 3Below, The Academy Family Series gives our fans/members a chance to introduce their children to the joy of beloved classic family films on the big screen. At each screening we present a mini film appreciation course by way of trivia and post-performance discussions with the children and their families. We look at this as the opportunity for pintsize cinephiles to catch up on the best in children’s films and promote critical thinking and discussion by having the children write reviews of the films and vote for their favorite films. We host an informal awards ceremony at the conclusion of each series
We are not a movie theatre; we are a school, a museum. We host film festivals that are part of our mission to educate, entertain, and engage our students and families. Our screenings, as part of our education mission, have a facilitator who promotes discussion at the theater and engages families to take the conversation home following a child’s viewing of a film. We also screen films for schools as part of our outreach program in which teachers are able to engage their students in subjects associated with the curriculum or exhibitions we have running.
One of the goals of The Academy is to introduce young people to the excitement and wonderful world of theatre and film.
A mini-learning guide is placed on our website with the mission to promote discussion and experience the movie together not in and insular setting/manner. We engage, educate, and entertain our audiences by creating community and promoting discussion.
The experience of going to the theatre doesn’t have to end with the credits or the curtain call. Our events stimulate thought and inspire curiosity, whether it’s into the culture depicted, other writings by the authors or directors, or the encouragement to discuss concepts presented in the play or film. Teachers, students, parents, and all Academy audiences are able to discuss each of our events before attending them as well as after they have experienced the play or movie.
The Academy Family Series is designed to bring these life enhancing activities into your family unit.
We believe that theatre provides much more than entertainment and much more than an average TV show. We believe that theatre should be a community event rather than a private experience; theatre should challenge families. We believe that the time spent driving home in the car talking about the play or movie sharing ideas and experiences, is in many ways more important than the play or movie itself.
We promise to engage you, to educate you, and to entertain you – a worthwhile choice for your entertainment dollar.
