Auditions

The Playhouse at 3Below Theaters holds one General Audition each year and auditions for productions and events throughout the year as needed.

    General Auditions for The Playhouse at 3Below Theaters

    Submissions are now being accepted for our current Playhouse Series

      PLAYHOUSE SERIES REHEARSALS

      Rehearsals are typically 10am-5pm, 6 days a week for three or four weeks prior to opening depending on production. Tech week is typically 1pm-10pm.

      PLAYHOUSE SERIES PERFORMANCES

      Performances are typically Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 7:30pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30pm

      CLUBHOUSE SERIES REHEARSALS

      Rehearsals are typically scheduled based on actor availability either during the day or in the evenings plus weekends for a short and fast process of 1-2 weeks for these 45-minute musicals.

      CLUBHOUSE SERIES PERFORMANCES

      Performances are typically Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00am, 1:30pm, and sales meriting, 4:00pm. Special evening performances are sometimes scheduled (e.g. for Halloween.)


      Audition Information

      WHO SHOULD APPLY:

      • The Playhouse at 3Below Theaters works to reflect the diversity of the Bay Area community we serve. We encourage performers who sing, dance, and act of all identities including ethnicity, orientation, gender identity and expression, accessibility need, and age to audition.


      SUBMISSION DEADLINE:

      • In-person auditions will be Tuesday, December 19, 2pm-7pm and Wednesday December 20, 10am-4pm at 3Below Theaters, 288 South 2nd Street, San Jose. Please park in the garage above the venue so we can validate your parking for up to 3.5 hours. 
      • The deadline to submit to attend our 2024 General Auditions is December 18, 2023 at midnight.
      • Non-AEA performers are invited to send video auditions, accepted now through December 22, 2023. Samples of your work from previous productions are fine as long as we can see your face and hear your voice clearly!
      • If submitting video, please send your videos by the end of day on December 22, 2023.

      HOW TO APPLY:

      Video auditions will be accepted through December 22, 2023. AEA and non-AEA artists should follow the submission guidelines below to apply:

      • Choose a song from options below using the provided accompaniment OR to select a song of your choice for which you will need to provide your own accompaniment
      • Your video(s) should include the following:
        • Introduction – Use this 1-2 minute introduction to help us get to know you a bit.  If you need some prompting: share a favorite holiday memory…tell us about a favorite moment on stage or in an audience…dogs or cats?
        • Song – Do as many takes as you need to get a recording you feel shows you off singing a song of your choosing OR following the instructions below to present a song from the provided list of options
        • Song #2 (optional) – If your first song only shows one aspect of what you can do, feel free to submit another piece.
        • You can put everything in one video or use the  fields in the form to submit links for up to three videos
      • Complete the form by answering the questions and look for an email confirming receipt of your submission.

      To attend the General auditions in person, please fill out the Audition Intake Form and note your preference to attend. An email will be sent you you confirming your time.

      All performers please prepare 16-32 bars of (2) contrasting musical theatre selections similar to those projected in our season. Please choose songs that show you at your best. Additional information on each production can be found below.

      • [PRINCESS] 18+. A spoiled despot with unrivaled authority, Princess will stop at nothing to stay in power. Pop Belt.

      • [POLICE OFFICER] 18+. A passionately devoted public servant, Police Officer struggles to balance their personal and professional relationships. Pop / R&B Belt.

      • [CONSTRUCTION WORKER] 18+. Committed to building a better world, Construction Worker possesses a big, tough presence and an even bigger heart. Pop / R&B Belt.

      • [PILE OF POO] 18+. The self-aware self-help guru of our story, Poo gives no sh*ts and encourages others to be proud of who they are too. Pop / R&B Belt.

      • [INFORMATION DESK PERSON, KISSY FACE & OTHERS] 18+. Information Desk Person – Emojiland’s energetic TV news reporter. Kissy Face – a fun, flirty airhead who can’t help but come on strong. Dancer who sings well. Pop / R&B Belt.

      Men

      • [SUNNY] 18+. Sunny (short for Smiling Face with Sunglasses) is charismatically cool and confident, yet loudly and shamelessly self-absorbed. Pop / R&B Belt.

      • [NERD FACE] 18+. Awkward, earnest, idealistic and impressively well-read, Nerd Face just wants a friend. Pop Character Belt.

      • [SKULL] 18+. Deeply twisted with a dry, humorous sense of ennui, Skull’s existential crisis leads to phone-wide catastrophe. Rockstar Pop Belt with a wide vocal range.

      • [PRINCE] 18+. A confidently flamboyant entitled brat, Prince just wants to have fun and throw parties. Pop Belt.

      • [PERSON IN BUSINESS SUIT LEVITATING & OTHERS] 18+. Person In Business Suit Levitating is a smooth-talking, swanky, corporate executive. Must be comfortable skating around the stage on wheelies. Pop / R&B Belt.

      • [GUARD, WORRIED FACE & OTHERS] 18+. Guard – the royal gatekeeper, bouncer, and list-keeper. Fabulously brassy and loyal to Princess and Prince. Worried Face – Neurotic, anxious, panicked, thinks a crisis is around every corner. Dancer who sings well. Pop / R&B Belt.

      The Prom

      Performances: April 25-May 19, 2024

      • EMMA NOLAN ~ Teenager in Indiana. A reluctant poster child for LGTBQ+ youth. Very smart. A bit of a tomboy quality. Wears their heart on their sleeve. Not your typical leading lady. Must be a strong actor and singer with underdog energy and a charming sense of awkward/anxious humor. Ability to play guitar an asset but not a requirement. Female identifying.  Vocal range: F3 – E5.  Strong soloist – Needs to have a strong mix belt

      • ALYSSA GREENE ~ A cheerleader and top student. Secretly Emma’s girlfriend. Faces constant pressure from her mother and friends. A little miss perfect who chafes under the pressure and isn’t quite as perfect as she seems. Must be a strong actor, singer and mover. Female identifying.  Vocal range: Ab 3 – Eb5. Strong soloist

      • MRS. GREENE ~ Alyssa’s intimidating, conservative, single mother. The head of the PTA. Knows deep down that her daughter Alyssa is struggling with her identity. She is too afraid to face the reality because she fears her daughter will face a hard life. Strong actor. Late 30’s-50’s. Female identifying. Vocal range: A3 – C5. Primarily ensemble singing

      • DEE DEE ALLEN ~ Broadway diva. A huge ego to match her huge talent. Hilariously self-involved but yearns to do something good for someone other than herself. Known for her strong Broadway belt vocals and large stage presence. Jaded with relationships so does not believe in true love until she meets Mr. Hawkins. Strong actor and singer. Late 30’s-60’s. Female identifying. Vocal range: E3 – D5; Actor needs to have a strong belt or a very strong mix belt

      • ANGIE DICKINSON ~ A long running ensemble member in the Broadway production of Chicago (20 years!). Jaded Fosse girl with a heart of gold. Strong actor/singer/dancer – flexibility an asset. Late 30’s-50’s. Female identifying. Vocal range: Ab3 – E5 

      • OLIVIA KEATING/MOTEL CLERK/MRS. GREENE’S FRIEND ~ Broadway reporter Olivia Keating/ Quirky small town Motel Clerk/Mrs. Greene’s friend (a total “Karen”)/Opening Night Party Attendee/High School Student/Cast Member of the Non-Equity Tour of Godspell/ Monster Truck Rally Announcer/LGBT Student among others… Hilarious and versatile character actor who will be playing all of the bit parts, as well as fitting into big ensemble numbers. Strong actor. Good singer/mover. 30’s-50’s. Female identifying. Vocal range: Open – Will be adjusted to fit the actor

      • SHELBY/ENSEMBLE ~ Popular cheerleader at school. Kaylee’s second in command, and Kevin’s girlfriend. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/dancer. Female identifying. Vocal range: Wide range

      • KAYLEE/ENSEMBLE ~ Head cheerleader and lead mean girl. Nick’s girlfriend. Every girl wants to be her, and every guy wants to date her. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/ dancer. Female identifying. Vocal range top: Wide range

      Men

      • TRENT OLIVER ~ Pretentious Juilliard graduate recently cast in the non-Equity tour of Godspell. Handsome, charming, funny and loves to hear himself speak. Strong actor/singer/mover. 30’s-40’s. Male identifying. Vocal range: C3- Ab4; Actor will require a large vocal range. The top is most important but having the full gamut would be ideal!

      • BARRY GLICKMAN ~ A very gay Broadway star. Completely politically incorrect and doesn’t know it. Impulsive and loves to make a scene everywhere he goes. Strong singer. Big, Broadway belter. 30’s – 50’s, High Baritone/Tenor. PRINCIPAL. Vocal Range B2 – F#4

      • MARION HAWKINS ~ A small town principal. Easily flustered. Straight-laced. A Broadway enthusiast. Good singer. PRINCIPAL. 30’s – 50’s, High Baritone. Vocal Range G2 – C4

      • SHELDON or “SHELLY” SAPERSTEIN ~ A charismatic press agent who works for both Dee Dee and Barry. Dry wit a must. Great character actor. Late 30’s-60’s. Female, Male OR Non-Binary identifying. Vocal range: Open – Will be adjusted to fit the actor

      • NICK/ENSEMBLE ~ Popular jock at school. Kaylee’s boyfriend. Incredibly handsome – every guy wants to be him, and every girl wants to be with him. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/dancer. Male identifying. Vocal range: Actor needs to have an F4

      • KEVIN/ENSEMBLE ~ Jock at school and Shelby’s boyfriend. Nicks right hand and the class clown. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/dancer. Male identifying. Vocal range: Actor needs to have a G4

      • The Proprietor / Emma Goldman

        • The Proprietor ~  A mysterious man who runs the shooting gallery at a carnival.

        • Emma Goldman ~ (1869-1940) Turn-of-the-century Anarchist agitator and feminist. Terse and stubborn. An inspiration to Czolgosz.

      • John Wilkes Booth ~ (1838-1865) Assassinated President Abraham Lincoln during a performance at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. on April 14, 1865. Foreman and inspirational celebrity to the other assassins.

      • Jonathan Weiruss/Satan – Weiruss, the warm-up man whom Jerry Springer fires for incompetence

      • Steve Wilkos – Head of Security at Jerry Springer

      • Dwight/God – Dwight, a guest on the show who is cheating on his fiancée with two other people. God appears in Act III

      • Tremont/Angel Gabriel – Tremont, a guest on the show, a cross-dressing man who is having an affair with Dwight. Angel Gabriel appears in Act III

      • Montel/Jesus – Montel, a guest on the show, enjoys dressing as a baby and fouling his own underwear. Jesus appears in Act III

      • Chucky/Adam – Chucky, a guest on the show, is Shawntel’s redneck husband, who does not approve of her career desires. Adam appears in Act III

      Women

      • Peaches/Baby Jane – Peaches, a guest on the show, who is Dwight’s fiancée. Baby Jane is an adult baby in Act III

      • Zandra/Irene/Mary – Zandra, a guest on the show, is the best friend of Peaches, and is having an affair with Dwight. Irene is Shawntel’s ashamed mother. Mary appears in Act III

      • Andrea/Archangel Michael – Andrea, a guest on the show, is Montel’s lover. Archangel Michael appears in Act III

      • Shawntel/Eve – Shawntel, a guest on the show, dreams of becoming an exotic dancer, but her husband, Chucky, disapproves. Eve appears in Act III.


      COMPENSATION:

      AEA contracts are available. Because the SPT contract is negotiated each year, we will not know exact pay rates for AEA contracts until the negotiation is completed. Past salary ranges have been in either Category 4 or 5.

      Rates for Non-AEA performers will be announced once AEA details are finalized.

      Please note: The Playhouse at 3Below Theaters is unable to provide housing for non-local artists. AEA artists will be signed on a local contract.
