The programmers of San Jose Arthouse at 3Below Theaters believe that cinema is a communal experience with the power to entertain, enlighten and inspire. There’s something about the thrill of shared experiences—the energy, the euphoria—that can’t be felt alone. Whether it’s in the celebration of the arts, the revival of nostalgia, or the frenzy of something new. We believe in the power of cinema to create these moments, and we are dedicated to making these moments happen for our community.
Those of a “certain age” will remember the “After School Specials” that aired on TV on Wednesday afternoons featuring stories showing the many paths from childhood to adulthood. There’s no one true marker of when the switch happens: it could be brought on by a first love (or first heartbreak), a loss of innocence, or the acquisition of a newfound responsibility. But no matter how it happens, the bittersweet nostalgia that goes along with coming-of-age stories is always one that stirs up big feelings. 3Below has curated some of the best movies about growing up just in time for summer lovin’.

Fifty years ago people may have imagined the future as being quite different than it is today but remarkably, so much is the same: the country watches intently as a disgraced former president faces allegations of covering up illegal activities, inflation is completely out of control, and the Supreme Court is hearing arguments on the state of abortion. That’s 1973 America AND 2023 America. This summer, go back in time with an eye on the future as you watch movie masterpieces those turbulent times helped produce — and the art this generation might create to help us process the challenges we face today. This retrospective on 1973 features 18 films celebrating their golden anniversary. While some of our favorites are absent from the lineup because they’re either out of release or slated for restorations and anniversary screenings later in the year, this outstanding assortment of some of the most memorable and representative films of the era has a little bit of something for everyone. From canonical masterworks to under-appreciated gems, from cult oddities to family friendly fare, this cinematic survey of a pivotal year in American culture seeks to offer a glimpse into an incredibly exciting moment in motion picture history.
