Sequins and feathers fly as family values and outrageous comedy take center stage at San Jose Playhouse with the legendary Tony Award® winning musical. This crowd-pleasing, rollicking, and heartwarming musical about family, commitment, show biz, and drag remains one of musical theatre’s all-time biggest hits. A fun, silly musical based on the film and play of the same name, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES is the first show to ever win the Tony Award for Best Musical three times. With a score by Jerry Herman (MAME, HELLO, DOLLY!) and a book by Harvey Fierstein (NEWSIES, KINKY BOOTS) you’ll discover that “the best of times” is now!
Set against the glitter of a Saint-Tropez nightclub, a middle-aged gay couple agree to hide their relationship when their son returns home to announce his engagement…to the daughter of the Tradition, Family and Morality Party leader. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as “normal” when he meets the family of the bride-to-be…but Albin has other plans: a gender bending plot of Shakespearean proportions! Feathers get ruffled and households upended in a poignant tale of one family’s struggle to stay together, stay fabulous, and above all else, stay true to themselves. The result is a hilarious, heartwarming tale about the real meaning of family, and the power of love and understanding to dissolve the walls between “us” and “them.”

“Though the show celebrates the marriage of one over-the-top drag queen and her enduringly loyal guy, La Cage now registers more than ever as feel-good family entertainment.” –The New York Times
“La Cage aux Folles is an extravagant, old-fashioned family musical containing likable characters, a sentimental love story, sumptuous sets and costumes – and songs that can be hummed on the way home.” –The New York Times
“It’s a family show, and if the family happens to be gay, that’s of no moment. If Rodgers and Hammerstein were in full swing today, they’d have grabbed it, for it makes The King and I seem rather daring by comparison.” –New York Daily News
