Put on your ruby slippers and celebrate SAN JOSE PRIDE with us as we present The Wizard of Oz at 3Below. This film is not part of the queer canon only because “friend of Dorothy” became code for homosexual but also from interpreting the three central male characters Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion as gay men revolving around a campy heroine. Dorothy running away from home and creating her own family mirrors the “found family” in queer communities. Her journey from the black-and-white Midwest to the colorful and vibrant Oz is like young queer kids leaving home and traveling to the big city. And with the rainbow flag being an iconic symbol of queer pride, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” plays like an anthem for queer longing and hope. Dorothy and her friends conquering the Wicked Witch of the West, despite all rejecting traditionally heroic (masculine and heteronormative) qualities is inspiring for outcasts who don’t fit in.
Let’s not downplay how this movie can be a lot of fun as a camp classic. The movie is wild with over-the-top characters, jubilant songs, lavish costumes and production design, and fantastical performances. The Wizard of Oz is so striking and arresting, and just bounces off the screen. The Wizard of Oz is a masterpiece of old Hollywood filmmaking.
The Wizard of Oz means a lot of things to a lot of people. It’s comforting, it’s ludicrous, it’s fabulous. And it’s often a necessary reminder that when times are tough, there’s no place like home—however one chooses to define what that means.
Audience members are encouraged to dress as their favorite Wizard of Oz character. The Master of Ceremonies will lead an on-stage costume parade, where prizes will be awarded for imagination and creativity. Munchkins, flying monkeys, and twisters are all welcome!

Back in 2009 when we hosted our first “along”, we had no idea we would go on to present hundreds of sing-along and quote-along events delighting tens of thousands of people throughout the state. Now that we have a theater to program 365 days a year, we have plenty of opportunities to book the best in interactive entertainment!
Our interactive experiences begin with a pre-show led by our quirky and witty emcee who welcomes our enthusiastic audiences and introduces the interactive elements of each Sing-Along, Quote-Along or Special Event Experience. A Fun Pack is included as part of admission to enhance the participation experience. And, additional in-movie antics with even more giveaways and props are frequently part of the fun.
The pre-show starts at the published event time; no need to arrive any earlier than you normally would to get great food and drinks from our café, use the restrooms, and find your seats – and since seats are reserved in advance, you’ll save even more time. During the pre-show, our host will explain all the fun planned for the event including the fun pack included with your admission price, the on-screen lyrics (for sing-alongs), and other in-movie antics you can look forward to.
Dressing up in a costume from the movie, or that ties in creatively, is always encouraged! We may even bring you up to showcase your costume as part of the pre-show festivities…and sometimes we even have costume contests for terrific prizes.
